Ashton Park Year 10 Careers Day
The start of December marked the return of another successful year 10 careers day at Ashton Park School. With workshops covering everything from aerospace to app design, students had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a wide range of sectors.
The atmosphere was buzzing in the hall as students speed-networked with volunteers across sectors ranging from construction thanks to like of Steve and Natalie from Onsite Central Ltd to and wildlife conservation with Tish from Avon Wildlife Trust. Volunteers came ready to be grilled by students on everything from their favourite day at work to advice they would give to their past self. Through this rapid questioning, our volunteers were generous with tales of successes and challenges that had led them to where they are today.
Over in the classrooms, students were ready to get hands-on experience with employers. Airbus turned the classroom into an engineering workshop with students designing and creating their own wing boxes. Meanwhile, BJSS had students becoming tech experts as they brainstormed ideas for an app to increase accessibility across Bristol parks.
With GCSEs ramping up, students were eager to understand how their school subjects linked to the world of work. Many were surprised to find that their classroom skills had real world uses. This included using their analytical skills from history in the corporate world or their love of food technology in an NHS career.
As the day concluded, students shared that they felt they now felt far more confident that there are interesting and exciting career paths that they could pursue. A huge thank you to everyone that volunteered and shared their experiences and inspiring the young people of Ashton Park School to pursue their own passions. Volunteers included: Airbus, Army, BJSS, Bottle Yard Studios, Fujitsu, Onsite Construction, Make Construction ,Arcadis, Hippo Digital, Yunex, Savills, Bristol Airport, Ryton Associates ,Babcock International, Hartnell Taylor Cook, Kier Construction, NHS, Iken, Jeff Way and Avon Wildlife Trust
And of course, an extra special thank you to the staff at Ashton Park for co-ordinating and supporting the event!
