Skills, Shakes and Success: A Day in Hospitality at Mollie’s
Students from North Star 240 enjoyed an exciting and eye‑opening careers visit to Mollie’s Hotel & Diner, where they spent the day exploring what it’s really like to work in the fast‑paced world of hospitality. Designed to give learners a real insight into the hospitality sector, the visit combined practical challenges, behind‑the‑scenes exploration, and plenty of opportunities to build confidence and essential workplace skills.

The day began with a guided tour of the motel, where students were able to step behind-the-scenes and see how different teams work together to create a smooth and welcoming guest experience. From reception to housekeeping to guest services, the team at Mollie’s shared their expertise and highlighted the wide range of roles that keep the venue running smoothly. For many students, it was an eye‑opening introduction to the variety of career pathways available within the sector.
Next came the bed‑making challenge – a deceptively tricky task! During the challenge students learned the importance of teamwork, communication and attention to detail. Students discovered that tasks that look simple from the outside require real skill, focus, and a positive attitude – exactly the qualities employers look for!
Of course, no trip to Mollie’s would be complete without something delicious. To round off the experience, students headed to the diner to create their own Mollie’s Milkshakes. Not only fun and delicious, but this activity also reinforced key employability skills such as following instructions, customer awareness, and taking pride in a finished product.

Throughout the day, one message came through clearly: in hospitality, your skills and attitude matter just as much as your experience. The visit helped students recognise the value of being adaptable, positive, willing to learn and a variety of other employability skills.
Experiences like this not only broaden horizons but also help young people understand how their strengths can translate into exciting future careers. A massive thank you to Mollies for providing this valuable experience, and, of course, an enormous thank you and well done to the students and staff at Northstar 240 for their enthusiasm and energy throughout the morning.
