Recognising achievement: Young Parents celebrate their English and Maths success
The Young Parents Team, part of Bristol City Council’s Post 16 service, have been supporting classes of young parents with studying for their English and Maths Functional Skills qualifications.
In July 2025, the group met for an afternoon of celebration at The Station in central Bristol. Here, the group have been meeting weekly to study and revise for their exams, whilst their little ones socialise and play together. Not only do the classes allow for the young people to get their qualifications, but they are also able to make friends and find support from their peers, as well as their mentors Jules and Nicky.
Over the course of the year, the friendships between the young people and their children have grown, and everyone was able to celebrate together at The Station. As the parents were given awards for all their hard work and achievements, their little ones enjoyed a lovely lunch of quiche, fruit and cake, provided by the Young Parents Team.
With their new English and Maths qualifications, the young people will be able to consider their next steps with employment, education or training. Several members of the group are already in employment but can now progress if they wish to. Others are looking for jobs and some are off to college.
As the group allows for the study of various levels of qualifications in Functional Skills (Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2), some of this cohort will be welcomed back in September when Community Learning will be managing the course.
