RefugEAP – Free programme for Refugee Background Students
Hope you’re all having a good start to the summer.
We’re just getting in touch to let you know that the application window is now open for students to apply for a place on the next iteration of the RefugEAP Programme, which will be starting in October 2023.
What is the RefugEAP Programme?
It’s a free online pre-university academic English skills programme for refugee-background students across the UK, delivered by dedicated and experienced volunteer tutors. This programme is designed to fill a need for students who need to improve their academic English skills to help them access a degree programme at university, but perhaps have not been able to access formal pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) provision yet. You can find out more about the programme and its impact so far via the website, this video presentation or this British Council Teaching English podcast episode.
Student recruitment
We are now looking to recruit students for the 2023/24 cohort, with Module 1 running from 2/10 to 15/12. If you know of any refugee-background students who might potentially benefit from this programme (perhaps because they have not been able to secure a sanctuary fee-waiver on a pre-sessional), please could you take a look through the eligibility criteria and further information for students first of all to check that they meet the criteria. If it seems like a good fit for them, could you then:
- ask them to read the information on the following RefugEAP Programme web page carefully
- if they feel they meet the eligibility criteria and can commit to the number of weekly classes and independent study hours, they can then fill in the needs analysis form on the same web page (by the application deadline of 23:59 on Sunday 10th Sept 2023, but earlier applications are encouraged)
Please note that there are only a limited number of places available on the programme, so we will need to select based on which applicants are eligible, suitable, able to commit to the ten weeks of classes and independent study per module, and likely to benefit most from the provision.
Please do forward this email to any person/institution/agency who might be interested in this opportunity. If you have any questions about the programme, please email us at refugeap@le.ac.uk
