Bristol WORKS Christmas Round Up

As 2018 comes to a close, Bristol WORKS has much to celebrate.

With activity underway or planned at all Bristol WORKS partner schools, Oasis Academy Brightstowe, Bridge Learning Campus and Knowle DGE, the experience of work activity has got off to a great start.

A budding team of journalists and designers have been working on a new school newsletter at Oasis Brightstowe. Meeting weekly with boomsatsuma Media Production students, with input and feedback from a different employer each term, the team are designing and creating a new school publication.

To further encourage creativity at the school, Bristol WORKS has also facilitated employer visits that see creative professional volunteers visit the school and talk to Key Stage 3 students about links between creative subjects and jobs in the creative sector. The performing arts department also had a visit from a theatre specialist from boomsatsuma, running a workshop and teaching them about careers in performing arts.

Earlier this term, Knowle DGE students visited the site of ‘The Wave’ with Alun Griffiths to learn about careers in construction, and in the new year Alun Griffiths will be taking their ‘Bridge to Schools’ activity to Knowle DGE to further develop their understanding of construction and careers.

These taster sessions are set to continue with the ‘On Site’ team offering taster sessions in plumbing and carpentry as well as information and guidance about apprenticeships. Ebbie’s Kitchen will also be visiting Knowle DGE to support their catering students to learn about hospitality with a follow up from Bristol Hotel.

January will also see the start of group mentoring at Oasis Brightstowe and Bridge Learning Campus, where volunteers from non-traditional roles will visit groups of high ability students and discuss their careers and pathways in the hope that it will offer a better understanding of their future choices.

With much more Bristol WORKS activity to come, 2019 is set to be a great year!
