Bristol WORKS and Askew Cavanna Architects Inspire Students to Design for People and Planet
In November 2025, students from Oasis Academy John Williams and Bedminster Down stepped into the world of architecture through an immersive workshop delivered by Katie from Askew Cavanna Architects. The session introduced learners to the role of architects and how thoughtful design can shape communities and protect the environment.
Opening Doors to Architecture

The session began with an inspiring introduction from Katie, who explained what architects do, where they work, and the impact their designs have on everyday life. Students learned that architecture is not just about buildings—it’s about creating spaces that improve lives, foster community, and respect for the planet. Katie shared her excitement about the session: “It made me feel really excited that architecture may become an option for these students – who were all very different.” She added: “It was fantastic to see the students growing in confidence and gaining communication skills.”
High-Energy Rotational Activities
The workshop quickly moved into high-energy, hands-on tasks designed to spark creativity and collaboration. Students rotated through stations where they worked in teams using A1 paper and post-it notes to tackle big questions:
- What community spaces do you visit and why?
- What do you like or dislike about different designs?
- What is the recipe for a happy community space?

Learners explored how design choices—from green spaces and natural light to accessibility and safety—can transform communities. They picked apart images of spaces and told us why they liked and disliked them; they worked together to pick out community spaces in their areas and came up with reasons why certain spaces made them happy. This reflection not only helped build understanding for the role of an architect but also understanding of their own spaces, community, and how they feel in them. A student from Bedminster Down reflected: “The most useful thing about the session was using creativity to better understand the life of an architect.”
These activities didn’t just teach design principles—they helped students develop teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills, which they identified as key takeaways from the day.
Connecting Skills to Careers
The session encouraged learners to reflect on the skills they used and how these link to subjects they study in school. Creating a connection between transferable skills within the classroom and the workplace! Katie also shared her personal journey into architecture, explaining the qualifications and pathways available, including university degrees and apprenticeships.

Students were surprised to learn how many different roles exist within architecture and the built environment. One learner from Oasis Academy John Williams said: “I learned about different jobs you can do involving architecture.” And “One of the most useful things of today’s session was that architecture is really cool and I might consider it.” Another added: “I know if I wanted to do a job in architecture, one path is I would need to go to university for 5 years approx.”
Teachers noticed a shift in students’ aspirations. A Bedminster Down teacher commented that “The explanation about possible routes and how you can focus on specific areas as you learn” made the young people feel different about their futures.
Inspiring Confidence and Creativity
The workshop concluded with a lively Q&A, where students asked about life as an architect and the challenges of designing for diverse communities. Katie described architecture as a career that blends creativity, technical knowledge, and social responsibility—skills that are vital for shaping the future of our cities.
Reflecting on the day, Katie said: “Seeing the students grow in confidence throughout the session – having ideas” was the most rewarding. Students agreed, noting improvements in their communication and creativity skills. One learner summed it up perfectly: “It was really good and I would recommend it.”
A huge WORKS thankyou to Katie from Askew Cavanna and our wonderful WORKS schools!
