What’s cooking at Bristol WORKS

Over the last three weeks, budding chefs from New Fosseway School have been experiencing how a professional kitchen works and how to cook delicious healthy meals with Square Food Foundation, a Bristol-based CIC focussed on reducing hunger, improving health, and bringing people together through the power of cooking.
During three weekly sessions, students practiced a wide variety of skills such as organizing the workspace, cooking, chopping, cleaning, and handling equipment safely. With the help of Dan, the kitchen manager at Square Food, students learned how to make a pasta bake, leek & potato soup, and a delicious, quick, and easy soda bread.
The sessions covered various aspects of working in the kitchen, from health and safety, to learning the particularities of cooking techniques. They have also seen how kitchens can have a significant impact on their local communities, by helping Square Food Foundation prepare meal kits for families to make sure that children have access to a healthy home-cooked meal.

The students felt their confidence grow as they learned to find their way around the kitchen and perfect their chopping and cooking skills. They were very eager to get to know the staff and learn about all the different roles in this field of work.
The team at Square Food Foundation were glad to have such an energetic group of helpers and have found it really rewarding to see their skills improve throughout the sessions. Students were very inspired by the work taster experience overall and are very enthusiastic about following this career path.
