Checking in with Jet2
At the South Bristol Skills Academy excitement buzzed in the air as six staff members from Jet2 visited to meet 13 students from St Bernadettes school. Year 10 and 11 students engaged in a lively question-and-answer session about careers at Bristol airport. The visit aimed to inspire and inform about the various roles and opportunities available at an airline, emphasizing the diverse career paths beyond the cockpit.
The Bristol based Jet2 team consisted of a flight attendant, front of house supervisor, ramp team leader, a baggage handler, and two despatchers. Each took turns sharing insights into their daily responsibilities, the skills required for their roles, and the journey they took to get there.
The team emphasised the importance of communication and teamwork in all they do. They all demonstrated a passion for customer service and aviation, and they encouraged students to pursue their passions and remain resilient in the face of challenges.
The flight attendant highlighted the importance of customer service and explained the emphasis that Jet2 places on this. She described the training at Bristol airport and then Leeds airport that trainees go through including swimming and firefighting skills. Ramp team Leader Nick provided a glimpse into the critical behind-the-scenes operations that ensure luggage is safely and efficiently managed.
Students asked questions throughout the session, such as the challenges faced in each role, opportunities for career advancement, and educational pathways to enter the aviation industry. The Jet2 staff happily provided detailed answers including hours and timings of shifts, fostering a deeper understanding and interest in the various careers available at an airport.
The event concluded with a group photo and thanks from the students, who left feeling inspired and better informed about the aviation industry. Clearly, the sky’s the limit for these aspiring professionals! Thank you to City of Bristol college Dan Pollard for leading and hosting this event.
