From tyres to toolkits: behind the scenes with Bristol City Council Fleet Service
Students from St Matthias and Voyage Learning Campus recently had the exciting opportunity to explore behind the scenes at Bristol City Council’s Fleet Services. The visit offered a unique insight into the essential work that keeps a wide range of vehicles and equipment safe, roadworthy, and running smoothly.
Hosted by the Fleet Services team, the students began with a guided tour of the site. They learned that the team maintains not only council vehicles but also plant items such as lawn mowers and small machinery, as well as performing MOTs for members of the public. The breadth of work demonstrated just how varied and in-demand the skills of the Fleet Services team are, and how rewarding a career in the sector can be.
A highlight of the day was hearing directly from current apprentices and staff, who spoke about their journeys into the industry, their daily responsibilities, and the skills they’ve gained through hands-on experience. We also learned how valuable work experience can be – as one of the current apprentices began their journey with Fleet services via a work experience placement!
The visit was hands-on, with students taking part in practical challenges that tested both their curiosity and problem-solving skills, and which brought careers in the sector to life. They checked tyre tread depths on a vehicle using industry-standard tools to find the problem tyre, identified mechanical tools and their uses, and took part in a fun warning lights quiz, learning what different dashboard signals mean and why they matter. The team were said they were very impressed by the knowledge and skills demonstrated by the students.
The visit helped students connect with real-world career possibilities, giving them a clearer picture of the routes into vehicle and machine maintenance, including apprenticeships and technical qualifications. For some, it opened an interest in a field they hadn’t previously considered.
Huge thanks to Bristol City Council Fleet Services for their time, energy, and commitment to inspiring young people. Experiences like this have a lasting impact – opening minds and expanding horizons for students. We also extend a massive thanks to the teachers and students at St Matthias and Voyage Learning Campus for their fantastic engagement throughout the visit.
