WORKS Schools Tune in to Careers in TV and Film with Channel 4Schools!
This October, WORKS schools in Bristol got a front-row seat to the world of television, film, and digital media thanks to a series of exciting visits from 4Schools. Students didn’t just learn about careers in the screen industries—they stepped into the spotlight themselves!
In a series of 4schools workshops, Year 9 and 10 learners from Orchard School, and Year 11 learners from Oasis John Williams were given the chance to become mini production teams, taking on different roles in the film and TV industry. One learner mentioned that “It got us all working as a team, trying to come up with ideas like actual producers”. They had to come up with an idea for a TV show, work together to develop it, and then pitch it back to the group and Jacob from 4Schools himself. The best pitch even won a prize!
There were the likes of murder mysteries, celebrity cooking shows, camping reality TV all whilst considering diversity and inclusion, and all-important budgets. The learners enjoyed the activity. One said: “I liked working together as a group to make the show and to work on communication and to learn what Channel 4 is and how much work it takes to make a show!” It was a brilliant way to build confidence, creativity, and presentation skills—a real ratings winner.

Jacob also took centre stage and delivered assembly talks to two year groups at Orchard School. These included a 20-minute intro to the film and TV industry that gave students a taste of the many roles behind the camera. Learners commented that it was useful to be made aware of different roles in the industry and that they found “Learning about the kind of job roles available for post 16: director, actor, presenter, pitcher etc..” immensely eye opening!
Year 7 and 8 groups at Orchard School were tasked with a different workshop focusing on soft skills including communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. This included a fun game of People Bingo to help students realise they already have loads of transferable skills that apply to the workplace. It was like discovering hidden talents in their own back catalogue.

A teacher from Orchard shared that: “learning about the TV pitch process and different platforms for digital content” made young people feel differently about their futures. Jacob from 4schools also commented on the fact that “the enthusiasm of pupils” was rewarding.
A huge shout-out to learners from Orchard School and Oasis John Williams who took part and helped make this programme a smash hit. And of course, massive thanks to 4Schools for bringing the industry to life and helping students see themselves in future roles—whether that’s directing, editing, producing, or presenting.
Students left feeling inspired, informed, and ready to explore careers in one of the UK’s most exciting industries. Thanks to the power of partnership, we’re helping young people across Bristol channel their potential and stream their success.
Stay tuned—there’s more to come!
