National Trust – Taste of Tyntesfield morning
A group of enthusiastic Northstar 240 Year 9 and10 students stepped into the world of work this week during a dynamic work experience taster morning designed to showcase real-life job skills across three key areas of visitor attraction at Tyntesfield, in North Somerset.
The morning began at the Visitor Welcome desk, where students greeted visitors, handed out maps, scanned member tickets and learned the importance of first impressions and clear communication. With practise, they quickly discovered how vital a warm welcome can be in setting the tone for a visitor’s day.
Next stop: the Cow Barn Café, where lanyards were donned and sleeves rolled up. Students practiced customer service, helped with coffee orders, cleared tables and had a go at serving cake. This environment offered a glimpse into teamwork, time management, and the art of multitasking—all essential skills in hospitality.
The final rotation brought students to the Shop, where they explored retail tasks such as unpacking a delivery, restocking shelves, pricing items, and having a go at serving on the till. They learned how attention to detail and having even a small chat can enhance the customer’s shopping experience.
Throughout the morning, students rotated in pairs, gaining insight into different roles and responsibilities while building confidence and practical skills. Friendly National Trust Staff mentors were on hand to guide and encourage.
One student summed up the experience: “the work was a lot of fun, and I would love to come back.”
