Careers in Sports with Bristol City Robins Foundation and Knowle DGE Careers Week
On Thursday afternoon, Year 12 and 13 students at New Fosseway school heard from Bristol City Robins Foundation about the wonderful career and education opportunities available within sports and events. Sophie and Carly who delivered the session challenged students to think of the different types of job roles needed at Ashton Gate Stadium. With answers ranging from cooks and cleaners to coaches and groundskeepers, it was clear that the students realised there is much more to a sports stadium than just football players. The students also heard of the various education opportunities offered by the Robins Foundation, including a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport, a foundation degree in Community Coaching and Development and BA (Hons) Degree in Sports Business and Entrepreneurship.
Carly also told the students all about the NCS, an amazing opportunity for young people aged 15 to 17 to make friends, take on challenges, get a taste of independence and learn new skills. This two or three week programme takes place every summer and includes activities such as rock climbing or canoeing, cooking, budgeting and completing a local social action project. Additionally, this week has seen Bristol WORKS deliver five careers sessions to students at Knowle DGE as part of their Careers Week. Sessions included virtual tours and live Q&A with Bristol Old Vic theatre, Waitrose Westbury Park store and Bristol City Council Fleet Services as well as a virtual Meet & Greet with employees at Bell Group. A teacher from the school commented on the session with the Bristol Old Vic saying “my students were really focused and enjoyed the question and answer session… It was pleasing to see that they were so engaged”.
