New Fosseway say…. Action!
This week, Bristol WORKS supported a group of learners from New Fosseway to explore the exciting world of film and TV. We were joined by the wonderful team from Offspring Films who provided learners with a brilliant insight into what a career in film and TV could look like. Through a series of interactive activities, students were able to practice the skills they would need to complete real-life work challenges within the creative sector.
We were joined by Tom, Emelie and Zoe who kicked off the session by introducing their job roles before inviting us to watch a short film that explored the types of films that Offspring work on, including some amazing animal documentaries!
To set the scene, Offspring Films had bought along some of the kit that would typically be found and used on a TV/film shoot. Students were able to have a look at the protective and camouflaging kit that teams would have to wear when filming on location as well as the different camera lenses used to get the best wildlife shots. We were even able to try out the thermal scope which is used to detect animal movements in the dark! We learnt about the importance of staying in touch with your team when on location and practised our best radio voices when using the walkie talkies.
Next, learners were split into two groups and invited to try activities that emulated tasks and experiences of those working at Offspring Films. The first group joined Tom in planning a shoot at a location abroad. Learners had to decide what kit they needed to bring to their chosen location and be ready to justify why. They thought about health and safety, travel and transport, weather and what types of animals and wildlife we’d be expecting to see. The other group were challenged to test their animal knowledge through a very competitive game! Learners were encouraged to think about the exceptional qualities that some of our wildlife has and why we would want to tell their stories to the rest of the world through the TV screen.
We want to say a big thank you to the team at Offspring Films who created an informative and exciting session for the learners. Also a big well done and thank you to the students at New Fosseway for their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the session.
