Exploring Opportunities: Year 10 Careers Day at Merchants Academy
Earlier this month Year 10 pupils from Merchants Academy took part in an exciting careers day. Ahead of their work experience week in July, the day aimed to raise awareness of different career paths, develop key skills, and inspire pupils to think about their future opportunities and aspirations. The day was packed with engaging, interactive sessions delivered by representatives from Novotel, BJSS, Airbus, and MCS.
Novotel: Careers in Hospitality
The team from Novotel introduced students to the dynamic world of hospitality. Through hands-on activities, they demonstrated the wide range of roles within the industry, from event management to catering. Pupils were challenged to plan an exciting event to budget and got creative thinking up the perfect pizza to sell. The session sparked conversations about the growing opportunities within the hospitality sector and showed how key skills like communication, teamwork, and adaptability play a crucial role in this sector.
BJSS: Technology and Problem-Solving
BJSS ran a tech-focused session, challenging students to solve real-world problems by designing an app to be used in parks and green spaces. Pupils worked as part of team and even got up to present their creations to the rest of the class. There were some fantastic and innovative ideas, and the session left many inspired by the potential of a career in tech.
Airbus: The World of Aerospace
Airbus brought the excitement of the aerospace industry to life, offering insights into the cutting-edge technology that drives the sector. Pupils were fascinated by the engineering behind aircraft design and maintenance and out this knowledge to use by designing and building some incredible wing boxes. The session highlighted the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) subjects in pursuing careers in this field.
MCS: Engineering and Construction
MCS engaged students in the engineering and construction industry, showing how creativity and collaboration are essential in building and infrastructure projects. Pupils worked in teams to design and construct a bridge, balancing creativity with cost-efficiency. The activity highlighted the importance of problem-solving, teamwork and managing resources – essential skills in the construction and engineering industries.
By engaging with professionals and participating in practical activities, pupils were encouraged to start thinking about potential work experience opportunities and connect classroom learning with real-world opportunities. It was a fantastic opportunity for young people to explore their futures and prepare for success. Thank you to Merchants Academy and BJSS, Airbus, Novotel and MCS for making the day possible.
