A look back over the spring term with Bristol WORKS
With the Easter weekend fast approaching, Bristol WORKS are busy getting ready for the next few months with lots of exciting projects underway! In the lead up to summer we will be expanding our schools and delivering workshops into North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and BANES alongside our Bristol-wide engagement. We also are well underway with our curriculum work whereby we are supporting 60 students across 4 schools with next steps and transition planning. Our continued WORKS sessions have and will be continuing across our schools, and we have a lot of exciting projects in the pipeline for the summer term!
With the vast number of sessions delivered over the last few months we haven’t had chance to write about them all! Therefore, we thought we would take this opportunity to reflect on a couple of projects that hadn’t yet made it into our news stories.
Early March saw an exciting Tri-Service Day delivered at Oasis Academy Brightstowe! The Royal Navy, The Royal Army and The Royal Air Forces attended and delivered exciting workshops for students of both Oasis Academy Brightstowe and Oasis Academy Brislington. All the students got stuck in with the various activities ranging from teamwork relay races to tower building. One highlight was students building a tank they could actually drive! Alongside the fun students gained insight into the many career options and training available with one student saying the visit was “very informative and helpful”.
In the last few weeks Mr B and Friends have been getting involved with the Newspaper Group from North Star 240°! We had two great workshops focusing on page design and social media top tips. Students were able to get insight into the different careers available in a design agency and what a typical day looks like within these roles. Mr B and Friends also read the latest issue of the student’s newspaper and gave some feedback for the students to support with the next issue! It is amazing to have on-going support for this group of keen reporters!
Sticking with North Star 240° Bristol WORKS attended their latest Parents Evening last week. Delivery officers from Bristol WORKS were present at the school to speak to the students if they needed any guidance with respect to the careers; some Year 10 students were enthusiastic to visit the Bristol WORKS desk at the reception as they recalled past workshops they had attended by Bristol WORKS. The team handed out Post 16 directories and advised on pathways options for the students.
Finally a few weeks ago we had a follow up workshop by Colas Ltd with Ashton Park School students who had been involved in the Bridge Building workshop delivered in late January. The session focused on action planning for the students with a round table discussion about different pathways and careers. Many students were interested to hear about the work experience opportunities and different pathways into an organisation such as Colas Ltd.
Thank you to all our amazing employers who have supported workshops across the last few months, it has been an exciting and busy term! We look forward to what the next few months will bring and can’t wait to get back out on delivery after the Easter break.
