Creating and Constructing; Work Experience week at Orchard School
This term, Bristol WORKS supported Year 10 learners from Orchard school to learn about the world of work and the variety of exciting workshops, as part of Work Experience week. Year 10 learners took part in workshops with employers from a range of industries from digital art to construction.
They were visited by MCS, who put on an immersive session where students had to create a new development, with a limited budget and made entirely from sticks and connectors. The results were fantastic, with students learning about the importance of a strong foundation. It was amazing to see the different ways each group of learners approached the task. This was a real test of teamwork and strategy and helped students develop the skills they would need for a career in construction.
In the afternoon, BJSS came in to run an exciting workshop, where year 10 learners worked in small groups to create an app for a new Youth Fitness Centre in Bristol. Students had to consider the client, the budget and the best features for the app whilst keeping costs down. Students were then invited to pitch their apps to the rest of the group. It was wonderful to see the students stand up and explain their choices and how they might improve their apps if given more money from the client. This session helped students develop their problem solving and communication skills.
Year 10 then had the opportunity to meet an apprentice from Bristol City Council and the head of the council cultural team, who shared their experiences both as an apprentice and as someone who works with apprentices. The students asked insightful questions and left the session with a clearer understanding of the apprenticeship pathway.
The final session was delivered by MyWorld and the Watershed. Learners were asked to develop an interactive experience, using creative technology to engage their local community. This exciting session saw students plan everything from a virtual reality flying experience to using AI in a light show. What an exciting way to explore the creative industries!
It was fantastic to support Year 10 with their work experience week and show them the diverse pathways into employment. We would like to thank every volunteer who got involved and made the sessions such a success. We would also like to thank the staff at Orchard for supporting the sessions and getting involved. Year 10 showed real enthusiasm and were a joy to work with.
