National Careers Week 2024 – A week full of new opportunities
From the NHS Simulation Centre to making milkshakes at Mollie’s Diner, what an incredible week full of diverse opportunities for students across Bristol to delve into the world of work. It would take a whole book to tell you about every single exciting work session! So, here is a quick sneak peak of some of the work activities that went down…
We kicked off Monday with a fantastic advertising session from Helen at Clear Channel, Year 8 were given the chance to come up with their own advertising campaign. What an exciting start to the week. In the afternoon Year 10 students from Oasis Brightstowe visited the 4EI offices and learnt all about Earth Intelligence, a fantastic session that gave them a real world opportunity to use their geography skills.
Tuesday was a massive day with multiple events across the city. We hosted the Property Inclusion event at St Bernadette’s in conjunction with Bristol UWE. We had a broad range of industry experts from law and property backgrounds, mentoring and supporting students to redesign a space in Bristol Galleries. A huge success for the year 10 students involved, who presented their projects to a panel and blew us all away with innovation. Students from Kingsweston and New Fosseway got to explore the Bottle Yard Studios, joining a live set, meeting a famous BBC presenter, a brilliant experience for all involved. Students from Northstar 240 were also treated to a trip to Tyntesfield to explore all things National Trust.
We catapulted into Wednesday with an exciting session from Airbus! Students honed their design and budgeting skills through creating their own cabin design, a wonderful taster of the world of construction and engineering. Wednesday also saw Frazer from MyWorld and the Watershed deliver his third session to City Academy. Year 8 students created their own musical instruments using conductive ink, we saw everything from musical gloves to musical cutlery. A fantastic opportunity to learn more careers in creative technology.
Our taste buds were tantalised on Thursday when we took students from Northstar 240 to Mollie’s Diner to learn more about hospitality. Students toured the motel and then made their own milkshakes in the diner, what an excellent start to the day! Over at St Bernadette’s students in year 10 were visited by industry experts from architecture and construction, including Currie and Brown. Students were tasked with designing an iconic bridge in Bristol, with the support of the experts. The end designs were wonderful and it was clear students got a lot out of the session.
Finally, we rounded up the week with a Year 11 trip to the UHBW Simulation Centre in town, This session was tailored to students with an interest in Healthcare. Students got the opportunity to practice CPR on a mannequin and learnt about the real practical skills needed for a career in the NHS.
We could not have done this without our supportive, incredible employers, who really bought the world of work to light this week for learners, Well done to all involved – now looking forward to NCW 2025, bring it on
