Making Parks More Inclusive with BJSS
Year 9 students at Orchard school, took part in a fantastic session with Jenna and Charlie from the App company, BJSS. The session started with students learning about the wide variety of roles available in the tech industry. They found out which skills would align best to which career pathway, discovering that the tech industry is not limited to one type of skillset, and that there are potential career pathways whatever your personal strengths and attributes.
Students were tasked with designing an app for a client. The brief was to design an app to make Bristol parks more inclusive and accessible. Year 9 had to consider the user carefully and decide which features the app would need to meet the client’s brief. The app needed to include features for members of the public with disabilities, such as visual impairments, and they needed to ensure it could be accessed by everyone.
Once the app had been designed, students were asked to pitch the app to BJSS. After a nervous preparation for some students, the time came to share their ideas. We were all completely blown away by the creativity and ingenuity of the finished app proposals. Year 9 had carefully considered the brief, and had thought outside the box about ways to make the app truly functional and inclusive. Their understanding of applications was impressive.
Finally, students got to see the real-life app that BJSS had created and compare it to their own designs. They also got to find out a little more about working life in the tech world and ask their questions to Jenna and Charlie.
A huge thank you to Year 9 students at Orchard for their enthusiasm and engagement in the session, and of course to BJSS for hosting such a fantastic session!
