An Insight into the Construction industry with McAleer & Rushe
On Tuesday, students from Knowle DGE travelled to the city centre to learn more about the construction industry. Students were welcomed on site by McAleer & Rushe who are currently building a 255-bedroom 4-star hotel in the heart of Bristol. The students were excited to receive a health & safety induction and put on their PPE to commence a tour of the workplace.
The tour group were able to see what it’s like to work at a construction site and get an inside look into how the trades that were employed, work alongside each other.
The group were able to gain an insight into wire and cable installations, plumbing for the bathrooms, plastering and decorating. Their highlight was meeting the different professions including a scaffolder, plumber, electrician and plasterer who all started off their careers on an apprenticeship and have now worked their way up to become sought after specialists.
The group also were able to take part in an interactive Q and A with various professionals on site to gain a deeper understanding into their roles and potential careers available.
The tour group very much enjoyed the opportunity with many left feeling inspired by the positivity and enthusiasm that the workforce seemed to have for each other and the building they were working on. The group also had a new-found respect and understanding of the skills and knowledge used every day in the construction industry. But don’t just take our word for it, have look at some of the feedbacks provided below from the tour group.
A teacher from Knowle DGE commented “It was a very informative and great session which catered perfectly for students. The colleagues at McAleer & Rushe gave students a range of information such as safety, PPE, wages, trades and entry requirements as well as the importance of teamwork on site. It was delivered really well”
One student also shared, “I can imagine being here now” and that they loved “walking around learning what they do and how you can manage different groups of people in one place”
Many thanks to McAleer & Rushe (Patrick and Oliver especially) for this brilliant opportunity. We can’t wait to see the finished site!
