Year 9 careers workshops at North Star Academy Trust
Last week, we supported our first face to face session at North Star 240 for all their Year 9 students. As part of this, students accessed a fantastic hands-on session with Bristol Old Vic, who not only opened the discussion about careers but also discussed the history of the theatre. We all had a giggle when we found out that food was thrown on stage in the past when the audience did not like the show! As part of this session, students were able to take on the role of historians for the morning and they explored different theatre objects from the past and present and guessed what they would have been used for.
Other workshops included a team building session with Bristol Robins Foundation and Empire Fighting Chance which focused on resilience and confidence boosting. We were also able to guess and discuss all the different careers available across both organisations. We were also able to learn important life skills such as having a positive mindset! Some students said that they couldn’t skip when the skipping ropes came out and Aaron taught us the importance of a positive mindset. The young people were able to overcome initial worries and to have a go at something outside their comfort zone.
To finish off the morning Sixteen (our WORKS delivery partner) shared an overview of different careers and available and helped support students to explore how the things they like, and dislike can be a huge influencer when thinking about future careers. We then ended the afternoon with a virtual tour from Fleet services where we were able to have a live insight into the workshop. We were able to see different tools and guess what they were used for and see vehicles elevated and being worked on.
A massive thank you to all the employers for supporting with these fabulous workshops! It was brilliant to see all students get stuck in and to try something new!
