Creating a buzz at The Hive!
WORKS has recently delivered a number of sessions at The Hive at Broadlands Academy in the run up to their Open Event of their new space! This work in provisions out of Bristol has been funded through the Careers and Enterprise Company & West of England combined authority. We have had a successful run of sessions for the students with a member of staff concluding that there have been ‘lots of really amazing highlights’ across the sessions.
Take a look at what we have been up to below.
We started the week with a workshop focusing on product development with Zoe from The Food Works SW. We started looking at some well-known logos and discussing why they were successful! Students gained some top tips from Zoe and learnt about her career journey before having a go at designing a logo of their own. The session rounded up with an introduction to costing that students can take forward and use when creating crafts or foods in the future! Knowing the Open Event was coming up, this would prove to be a very useful resource for the young people involved. Students were very enthusiastic and asked lots of questions to Zoe about her career with one student saying the workshop ‘inspired them to create a product of their own in the future.
Later in the week, we were joined by Chelsea and Louise from Cratus Communications! Students of years 7, 9 and 11 got the opportunity to explore advertisement and media. Creating their own mood boards to plan for marketing, students were then able to create a flyer for their open event. One student who said the session helped them to ‘get new ideas’ developed their plans onto the computer and the completed poster was sent home to parents/carers to advertise the event. Students learnt about Cratus and the different jobs and pathways in a large company like this and gained some top tips of how to make their advertisement stand out from the crowd. It was great to see all the students getting creative and engaging with the activities. One student fed back that the session helped them to know ‘how they would want to plan an event in the future!’
With the preparation sessions complete, it was time for the main event! On Wednesday Zoe from The Food Works SW was back, this time for a catering session. Year 7 and Year 9 students arrived bright and early to make some cookies and energy balls that could be served as refreshments at the Open Event starting later in the morning. Zoe led us through each step and the end result was delicious!
After finishing the washing up, we packed up the kitchen and moved over to the space for the Open Event. Here there was a mixture of different activities from crafts, science, a sensory room and refreshments! WORKS was on hand to speak to any students or parents/carers about post 16 options. It was great to see the students getting involved with serving refreshments and demonstrating activities throughout the morning.
We were so pleased to be able to support The Hive in the run up to their Open Event and would like to thank Zoe, Chelsea and Louise for their support with these WORKS events!
